Here’s a new Certain Death mix. I tried to reel in some of the panning craziness (vocals too wide, etc) in the demo but otherwise it’s pretty similar. |

Okay, so I’ve listened through it a little bit, and it’s nice, but I think I actually prefer the demo. I think I like the crazy panning (or perhaps it’s something else, but the way the vocals sound anyway), and I also think the snare drum is a bit harsh during the verse in the new mix. I did like the synth bits that came forward a bit. These are of course just very general impressions, and I definitely want to listen to it a bit more. |

Oops…I meant to post my comment here, but it got posted on the main blog page by mistake. Main issue was the very boomy bass when I powered up the subwoofer, compared to the demo and compared to various other songs I happened to listen to. Here is my original comment: First of all, great song!..one of your best. When I activated the subwoofer, the bass line seemed VERY boomy on this song compared to the demo. This seems to be happening in the range roughly 120z down to maybe 50 or 60 hz. With subwoofer deactivated I didn’t notice the boom. I thought the sound effect at very beginning was too loud compared to demo. I am not sure about those extra 30 seconds of music at the end of new mix…maybe the length of the demo was more “radio friendly†if that matters. Maybe add de-essor (or tweak settings if one is already in use) to *slightly* reduce sibilance here and there. BTW, I just checked out Bad Sign mix again but this time with the subwoofer active. After the intro, Bad Sign bass line seemed muddy and indestinct with a pretty big thump that sounds like it’s in the kick drum. JY |

I’m likin’ this mix. Still feels very bright–especially up above 10khz–and the bass doesn’t quite translate on these monitors (When it does work it sounds great, but in places like 1:50 – 2:05 it disappears almost completely), but both highs and lows sound much better to me than in the Bad Sign mix. Love all the different synth textures, which keep the song feeling very dynamic, but perhaps they are too loud? I wish there were a little more kick drum and a little more Brad in this song: the vocals sound buried and over-excited to me. Lastly: holy crap that’s a great melody. |

i like this mix better. it’s not much different but i think with less stereo seperation it’s easier to listen to, and a little more final and will hold up better i think. sounds a little more mournful i’d say. suggestions, tone down the delay in the verses. otherwise top notch, but this song definitely is not in my favorites list though i think it’s pretty much reached it’s potential. |

I wonder what I’m doing wrong with the bass. I do know that these Events kinda blow for bass, but still I feel like I’m not compressing it properly or something, my frequencies are all over the place. |

Hey B, what exactly are you doing to the bass, compression & EQ wise? In my experience bass is absolute hell to get translating properly. I usually end up doing the parallel-compression thing: I route the bass and the kick to a second buss, roll-off the high frequencies and then just smash the hell out of it with a limiter. Then I bring that up underneath the existing mix. It can add a great sturdiness to the low end, plus it usually helps the kick and the bass get along with each other. YMMV, of course. |

I kinda just randomly flail around with compression on bass and pray to Jesus it works. Usually I EQ out some of the high-end if there’s noise and maybe some of the absolute bottom that just sounds boomy to me. So you’re bringing the super-limited version of the kick and bass up under the existing kick and bass? I’ll have to try that, I’ve read a lot of people use dual bass sounds. One for the actual character and one for “reinforcement”. |

-Solid outro/ending. Much more listneable (word?) than the demo. Have I told you guys that you’re all really doing a great job today? Good talk. DP |

Something that seems very apparent to me about this new mix: in the chorus, the falsetto voice overshadows your regular singing voice, where in the first demo it was the overshadowed one. I like the original mix better on vocals. |
